With a deep understanding of its own IP strengths, the company excels at illuminating the unique charms of the original works while adding fresh elements tailored to each new adaptation. Adding to this momentum, its summer slate of transformative, growth-driven stories highlighting protagonists who live on their own terms is expanding. The roster includes “Tomb Raider King,” “A Bona Fide Killer,” and “Doctor on the Edge,” showcasing to global audiences how the protagonists reshape their worlds.
Tomb Raider King
The animation adaptation of Kakao Entertainment’s flagship action-fantasy IP “Tomb Raider King” will launch in Korea on July 9 and in Japan in line with the local programming schedule. In Korea, it will be released on Netflix, Laftel, and ANIPLUS, and in Japan, it will air on Fuji TV and Kansai TV.
The story vividly depicts the growth and adventures of protagonist Seo Joo-heon, who returns to the past and becomes entangled in battles triggered by mysterious tombs and artifacts appearing across the world. The web novel and webtoon version of “Tomb Raider King” has accumulated more than 600 million views in Korea and overseas.
The anime is produced by Korea’s STUDIO EEK, known for titles such as “A Hen into the Wild” and the “Ghost Ball Z” series. Top-tier Japanese voice actors, including Yoshimasa Hosoya (“Attack on Titan”), Saori Hayami (“Demon Slayer,” “SPY x FAMILY”) and Junichi Suwabe (“Jujutsu Kaisen”) further elevate the adaptation, with K-pop girl group QWER performing the official opening theme song, “SHOW DOWN.”
A few days before the anime’s launch, “Tomb Raider King: Endline” – the sequel web novel and webtoon of the original story – were unveiled on Kakao Page. By expanding the existing fandom while embracing newcomers, Kakao Entertainment aims to maximize its IP synergy.
A Bona Fide Killer
Another drama portraying an evolving character is “A Bona Fide Killer,” which is poised to premiere on MBC on July 31.
It follows a working mother with the “most brutal job” in the world, struggling to maintain work-life balance. Kong Hyo-jin appears as the protagonist, Yu Bona, a devoted housewife and head of sales at a company. However, delving deeper, Yu lives a double life as the legendary sniper “Kingfisher,” who is committed to taking justice into her own hands by punishing wrongdoers who have escaped legal judgment. All eyes are now on how Kong portrays a character undergoing complex internal transformation as her overlapping identities begin to collide at key turning points.
“A Bona Fide Killer” is also a shining example underscoring the strength of Kakao Entertainment’s IP value chain. Based on the popular Kakao webtoon with a cumulative 180 million views, the drama is produced by Kakao Entertainment’s subsidiary, Baram Pictures, and stars Kong Hyo-jin from Management Soop, a subsidiary of Kakao Entertainment.
Doctor on the Edge
The coming-of-age medical romance “Doctor on the Edge,” available on Disney+, is mesmerizing global audiences as well. Based on the Kakao webtoon “The Persevering Doctor,” the series has enjoyed a strong run since its premiere, ranking in Disney+ Top 10 across 38 countries including Japan and Brazil, according to FlixPatrol.
Forced into public service on Pyeondongdo – the most dreaded, cut-off island in the country – plastic surgeon Do Ji-eui (Lee Jae-wook) thinks his life is over. But amidst the hostile locals and rugged conditions, he clashes with Yuk Ha-ri (Shin Ye-eun,) a sharp-witted nurse hiding a dark past. The story follows Do as he overcomes his deep emotional scars and is reborn as a true doctor.
Furthermore, Kakao Entertainment’s flagship IP “Solo Leveling” – an action fantasy following the extraordinary growth of the world’s weakest hunter into humanity’s strongest – will also receive a theatrical anime film adaptation titled “Solo Leveling -Beyond the System–” The film serves as an official sequel to the 2025 anime “Solo Leveling : Arise from the Shadow” and expands the franchise’s universe. It will be animated by A-1 Pictures and produced by Aniplex, Netmarble, D&C MEDIA, Kakao piccoma and Crunchyroll. Kakao Entertainment is also producing a live-action series adaptation of “Solo Leveling,” starring actor Byeon Woo-seok.
