Kakao Entertainment accelerates global success with webtoon adaptations: ‘The Bequeathed’ and ‘Gyeongseong Creature’

Seoul, January 16, 2024 – Kakao Entertainment continues to raise its global game with amazing new webtoon adaptations. Following the success of its major webtoon adaptations such as ‘Moving,’ ‘Business Proposal,’ ‘The Uncanny Counter,’ and ‘Not Others,’ the company showcases its unique ability to connect key elements across different media with ‘The Bequeathed’ and ‘Gyeongseong Creature.’

‘The Bequeathed’ – A Journey from webtoon to Netflix Series

‘The Bequeathed’ is set to debut globally as the popular Kakao Entertainment webtoon makes a thrilling leap to Netflix. Part 1 already achieved remarkable success on Kakao Page and Kakao Webtoon in Korea from November 27, leaving readers eager for more. The highly anticipated wait is almost over, as both Part 2 and the Netflix debut are scheduled to reach screens on January 19.

The Netflix series is directed by Sang-ho Yeon, renowned for his work such as ‘Train to Busan,’ ‘Peninsula,’ and ‘Hellbound.’ The gripping crime thriller series also features a star-studded cast, while masterfully blending Korean themes. The focus is on the main character Seo-ha Yoon (played by Hyun-ju Kim) who, after the sudden death of her uncle, inherits some land in the countryside that is used as her family’s graveyard. As the story unfolds, a series of sinister events and murders reveal shocking truths about the family and their graveyard.

Written by Tae-kyung Kang and illustrated by Jonoon and Rido, the webtoon delves deeply into human nature and intricate relationships, exploring the characters’ descent into madness fueled by the graveyard’s dark pull. Jonoon and Rido, who are well known for their masterful storytelling in Ornithophobia, reunite to infuse the story with a unique mix of horror and eerie atmospherics, all dramatically triggered by visually stunning artwork.

After the webtoon Part 2 and the Netflix series unfold on January 19, the chilling saga will expand its reach on Kakao Entertainment’s global platforms in the U.S., China, and other markets around Asia during February.

Gyeongseong Creature – Expanding the universe with “The Unwithering Flower”

Kakao Entertainment is also proving creatively adept at moving content from TV to webtoon, with the official announcement to develop a spin-off webtoon series of the acclaimed Netflix original, ‘Gyeongseong Creature.’ Created by Moai and Supercomics Studio, the new production gets an expanded title, ‘Gyeongseong Creatures: The Unwithering Flower,’ and promises a fresh and intriguing perspective on the Gyeongseong Creature narrative, extending its universe from a new angle.

The original survival-thriller drama on Netflix is set against the backdrop of the bleak spring of 1945 in a provincial hospital just outside of Seoul, telling the chilling tale of two young protagonists facing off against monsters born from perilous human experiments.

The spinoff webtoon adaptation is set in uncharted terrain on a small island where a different type of experiment creates a completely different being. It narrates the story of Geum-ran, who undergoes a transformative journey and avoids the monstrous fate inflicted by the experiment. Instead, she emerges as a wholly new entity endowed with human intelligence. Joined by her ally, Byeong-gil, she valiantly combats a clandestine conspiracy in a wonderfully fresh storyline that introduces a host of new characters while seamlessly weaving in the title’s established storylines and characters to add depth and complexity to the narrative.

After its initial release in Korea on January 20, Gyeongseong Creature: The Unwithering Flower webtoon will be released across Kakao Entertainment’s global platform network in the U.S., Thailand, Taiwan, and Indonesia, strategically aligning with marketing efforts for the Netflix series to drive global popularity.
