Kakao Entertainment Unveils a Jam-Packed Lineup With Films, Dramas, and Variety Shows in Second Half of 2024

JULY 15, 2024, SEOUL – Kakao Entertainment is set to captivate audience in the second half of 2024 with a broad range of quality shows including dramas, films, and variety shows. It plans to unveil a wide variety of productions that will give global audiences joy and excitement and pull their heartstrings with touching moments. Over the years, the company has focused on developing and producing premium content under multi-studio system. This system will be fine-tuned even further by facilitating collaboration between labels and joint projects between Kakao Entertainment and its studios. At the same time, IP crossover with story and music businesses is expected to create strong synergies that will win the hearts and minds of global audiences with well-made content.

The film Revolver, distributed by Plus M Entertainment, produced by Sanai Pictures, and co-produced by Plus M Entertainment and Story Rooftop, features Cannes heroine Jeon Do-yeon, Ji Chang-wook, and Lim Ji-yeon. The movie revolves around the story of Soo-yeong, an ex-police officer who embarks on a single-minded goal upon leaving jail after serving a sentence for crimes that she did not commit. This is the second film produced by the collaboration between director Oh Seung-uk, who was invited to the Un Certain Regard section of the Cannes Film Festival in recognition of his brilliant directing for the movie The Shameless, and Sanai Pictures, which has produced engrossing movies such as New World and Hunt. With the trailer and poster released, all eyes are now on the cast of the film, who has portrayed highly distinct characters with their passionate acting in a way that has never been seen before. The film Mission: Cross, produced jointly by Sanai Pictures, Obra Creative, and Plus M Entertainment, features brilliant actors including Hwang Jung-min and Yum Jung-ah, who never fail to impress the audience. It is set for release on Netflix in August.

Season 2 of Gyeongseong Creature, a Netflix series produced by STORY & PICTURES MEDIA and Kakao Entertainment and co-produced by Studio Dragon, is also ready to greet the audience in the second half. When Season 1 of the Netflix series was released last winter, it garnered considerable attention making it to the top-ten list in 69 countries. Set in the spring of 1945, a grim era of bitter darkness, Season 1 of this thriller portrays the story of a young man and woman who struggle for survival while fighting monsters born out of human greed. In a time slip to the year 2024, Season 2 is set in Seoul. Alongside Park Seo-joon and Han So-hee, Lee Mu-saeng from The Glory and Bae Hyeon-seong from Our Blues have joined the cast, heightening expectations from fans and the media.

The Disney+ original Gangnam B-Side, produced by Sanai Pictures, Plus M Entertainment, and Story Rooftop, will also debut in the second half of this year. The crime series follows the story of an elite detective who has been demoted, a low-ranking prosecutor with no connections, and a mysterious broker. They team up to pursue dark forces against the backdrop of Gangnam at night. Expectations are growing as the drama brings together Jo Woo-jin, who enthralled the audience with his explosive acting in Narco-Saints, Mr. Sunshine, and Guardian: The Lonely and Great God, and Ji Chang-wook, whose versatile acting skills shined in both crime-action and romance dramas such as The Worst of Evil and Welcome to Samdal-ri. The new drama is highly anticipated as it is the second drama series produced by Sanai Pictures, which received rave reviews last year for the Disney+ original The Worst of Evil, a new style of noir drama with a delicate storyline that earned the film specialist Sanai Pictures a reputation as a studio with an outstanding capacity to produce dramas as well.

Variety shows with distinct features and elements are also scheduled for release in the second half. One of them is Season 2 of Zombieverse, a Netflix variety series that is a new type of show marrying K-zombies with a K-variety format. Season 1 received significant attention when it was first released, by delivering a distinct fun experience. In the show, a sudden zombie virus outbreak has run amok and people have to outwit the undead in the face of challenging quests to come out alive. In addition to the members of Season 1 such as Dex, Ro Hong-chul, Lee Si-young, DinDin, Tsuki, and Patricia, new members have joined Season 2, including Taeyeon, Yook Sung-jae, Kwon Eun-bi, Cho Sae-ho, Defconn, Code Kunst, Kim Seon-tae, and Andre Rush. In addition, The Influencer, a social survival show that brings together the best influencers in Korea, will premiere on Netflix on August 6. It brings together 77 influencers in Korea, to battle it out and find the person with the greatest influence, where influence soon becomes their worth.

Kakao Entertainment has been producing more than 40 dramas, films, and variety shows this year, and fans are even enthusiastic about shows whose release dates are not determined or which are still in the making. Nine Puzzles, a Disney+ original produced by Moonlight Film and Kakao Entertainment and directed by Yoon Jong-bin, who received rave reviews worldwide as a competent director last year for his first drama series Narco-Saints, is gaining growing attention because of the leading duo of Kim Da-mi and Son Suk-ku. Other shows in the making are also highly anticipated by fans around the world. Karma, a Netflix series based on a Kakao webtoon of the same name is produced by Moonlight Film, Baram Pictures, and Kakao Entertainment and stars Park Hae-soo, Shin Min-a, Lee Hee-jun, Kim Sung-kyun, Lee Kwang-soo, and Gong Seung-yeon. Two Women, a Netflix series produced by Kakao Entertainment, directed by Jo Yeong-min, and written by Song Hye-jin feature Kim Go-eun, Park Ji-hyun, and Kim Gun-woo. When Life Gives You Tangerines, a Netflix series, is produced by Pan Entertainment and Baram Pictures. Directed by Kim Won-suk and written by Lim Sang-chun, the show stars IU and Park Bo-gum.
